In my career as a blogger, I always end up questioning myself whether I feel like my career & life can be called successful. You see, I’m indeed very proud of what I’ve accomplished so far, yet it’s very easy to compare myself to others & start doubting my strengths. This might be one of the biggest entrepreneurial struggles I’ve encountered, but I also believe that it’s important not to allow your thoughts to bother you. Thus, I decided to define my own success & I did. Life got a lot easier…
Success means a lot of different things to each of us. The only way to feel truly satisfied is to be straight with yourself & determine your dreams, goals & deadlines. Let me highlight some of the top points that helped me to come in peace with myself & I hope these can help you too.
Ask.
This one might sound too easy, but when was the last time you actually asked yourself what you truly want in life? Take a piece of paper, pour yourself a glass of red & begin a conversation with your inner self. Ask what does success look like to you. Is it making enough money or is it having more time to spend with your loved ones, great health & peace of mind? Make a plan for your perfect future- what do you see yourself having / feeling / getting rid of? Empower yourself to dream & be honest with yourself. You might be surprised by what you actually see your life as.
Forget About the Others
Look, this is your life, my friend. Think about what YOU want & what YOU need. Don’t waste your energy speculating what the society might think or what your parents, friends, partners expect from you. I understand, we all have our responsibilities, so I’m not saying you should just go ahead & quit everything right this minute, but at least start making a plan to get rid of the things that do not bring any pleasure into your life. It might be hard, it might be uncomfortable, but deep down you know that it simply feels right. Put yourself first at least for now. It’s absolutely OK.
Appreciate Yourself
By comparing our work to others, we can easily forget how far we’ve come already. I still have so many plans for my blog + biz & when I see that some of the things are not developing as fast as I’d wish, I try to remember where I’ve come from. Not that long ago, I was lost, I struggled to pay my bills, I worked in retail and hated every minute of it. I now have a dream job which allows me to travel, enjoy life & have enough sleep. My audience is constantly growing & I get fantastic offers every single day that I would never have dreamed of. This makes me sincerely appreciate my present & the work I do. Go ahead & do a rewind on your own story, remember how much you’ve improved already & appreciate your growth.
Get to Work
Now it’s the time to actually make a plan for your new defined success story. By knowing all the steps you have to take in order to achieve your dreams, you will convince yourself that it’s all possible, you just have to roll up your sleeves & get to work. Or, in fact, take a deep breath and find time to relax. Whatever your aspirations are, you have to make a plan & step-by-step list in order to make it happen.
For example, I always struggle at taking time off work. At the same time, I cannot say that I see success as constant hustling. Thus, I actually plan my me time in advance. I book cinema or theatre tickets, I arrange a date night or simply turn off all electronics and spend an evening with a book. To some, these things come naturally, but I know that if I don’t make a schedule for my free time, I’d end up checking e-mails & working on clients’ designs once again. As much as I love my work, I realise how crucial it is to relax every once in a while in order to feel successful.
Once you know your path, you will be able to celebrate your achievements no matter how big or small they are. This is the true secret of defining your own success.
