I’ve started this blog of mine while in my second year of university and I feel so lucky I’ve made this decision. If you’re currently thinking to start a blog as a student. Not only you’ll be able to share your new knowledge with the others, you might even end up making some money on the side!
I’ve started my blog just after the first semester of my second year in the University of Sussex, I was about to go abroad on an exchange programme in Amsterdam and thought it would be a great way to share my stories with family & friends. Little did I know that it will soon become my full-time job that I absolutely love!
Running a blog and studying at the same time actually proved to work very well for me and in this post, I wanted to share why I am truly glad I’ve decided to start a blog as a student and why I think you should do the same:
It Taught Me Some Very Useful Technical Skills
There’s so much you can learn through blogging. Not only it will improve your writing skills, you’ll also learn more about photography, web development, SEO and more!
I’m especially glad I’ve learned how to use Adobe Lightroom + Photoshop. It was a bit of a struggle at first, but learning how to edit my pictures really helped me a lot in growing my online presence. I also learned a lot about all the technical things of running a website and building an online brand which naturally impresses many employees.
Thus, running a blog while at university can give you a lot of skills for establishing yourself successfully in your future career.
It Got Me Into A Habit Of Writing Daily
Writing daily forces you to come up with new ideas regularly. While blogging, you will soon realise that ideas come from everywhere! Seriously, you can get inspired by the people you love, your routine, interesting article you read online or basically anything you come across to. When you write regularly, your eyes are open to these ideas and you’re ready to take them into action.
I blogged daily for the first year of running my blog. So, once the time has come to hand in my dissertation, writing 1000 words a day was pretty usual to me at this point. Running a blog really helped me prepare for any, even the biggest assignments without any stress as I was already used to creating content daily.
It Improved My Resume
I didn’t have much media-related job experience. I did work as a Media Assistant during the Olympics in London for a couple of months, but that was it really. I used to pay my rent working as a cashier in the first year of my student life and to say the least- I was a bit worried about getting hired by the employees. Luckily, once you run a blog, you can impressively expand your resume as you’ll get to work with brands, build your own presence and really show what are you capable of!
I Was Able To Support Myself Financially
Ok, so you shouldn’t get into blogging for money, but it can really become a great job while studying. The thing is, you get to work from home which means you’re in charge of your own hours. This way, you don’t have to spend your precious time at work when you have a very important exam coming up. You can take some time off and catch up on your blogging once your schedule clears out.
I Didn’t Have To Worry About Getting A Job Post Graduation
I never thought my blog will turn out to become my full-time job, but I’m so glad it did! This way, I didn’t have to worry about landing that dream job straight after university and didn’t have to feel that pressure that most of the new graduates deal with. Instead, I was able to go travelling and plan my life the way I want to without feeling stuck at one place just because of possible promotion or a bigger salary. Blogging can really open so many doors to you and even if you’re planning to get a job post-graduation- it will improve your chances big time!
