hello there friends! I just got back to Brighton after a week spent in snowy Austria and I feel completely refreshed and ready for my last semester in uni. I finally realised why people go skiing every single year and can’t stop talking about it. Seriously, it’s highly addictive!
thus, we landed in Innsbruck on Sunday and were amazed by the beauty of the city straight away. all this continental Europe architecture is just what I missed the most when living in UK. Everything feels so cozy and beautiful that I never want to leave. Innsbruck was something really special as well. It’s the city completely surrounded by Alps and for me, the one that always lived in the most flat Europe countries- is something unreal and completely new.
We spent our first day just walking around town and having traditional Austrian food and beers in the local pub/restaurant. We were a bit exhausted as we had to wake up 5am that day. However, the time came and we were picked to go to the place that we were going to stay at for the next 6 days.
We stayed in this amazing house somewhere in the middle of the mountains with a perfect view to the city and Alps. Coming from our tiny 1 bed apartment it was weird to live in this massive house once again. The neighbourhood was really friendly and we were greeted by “Guten Morgen” from everyone on our way to the skiing trails.
It was the first skiing attempt for me and the boy, so we were a bit scared at first and we managed to fell down like a hundred times in first few hours. It got pretty fun afterwards though. I still can’t say that I know how to do it properly, but on my last days I was already able to go on the red trials and don’t fall down! Probably, I annoyed all the other skiers with my absolutely slow motion kind of skiing, but oh, who cares, I’m learning- right? The boy was much more adventurous though. He already went on the bigger mountains on his second day and managed to try out about 20 different trials. Almost no legs were broken and it was amazing to know that we learnt something completely new together. We hope this will become our yearly tradition since now on.
The whole Zel Am Ziller ski resort was really great. Even though at this time of year it’s supposed to be completely busy- were was space for everyone and the staff was pretty friendly and welcoming. Also, apfelstrudel is being served in every single restaurant they have, so make sure to give it a try if you’re ever visiting Austria. It’s sweet, fat and the portions are massive, but it’s absolutely worth a try! Don’t forget to ask for vanilla sauce!
the snow was a great big bonus in this amazing trip. when we arrived it was still pretty warm in the city, but it started snowing heavily n our 3d day and we were sooo happy. we don’t get much snow in Brighton and even if we do- it melts straight away. Growing up in Lithuania meant having a proper snowy time every year and that’s what I really miss. thus, Austria treated us nicely with some proper snowstorms and views like this next morning:
sadly, it was time to pack our bags and leave. we were pretty exhausted after 5 intense days full of exercising, but it was all worth it! I slept for 12 hours straight afterwards, but now I’m completely reborn and ready for new challenges. I bet I will always remember our first skiing trip to Austria.
I’m already planning our next trip this springtime. I wonder where the wind will bring us this time…
