As simple as it sounds- I love to travel and I love to eat. I love to visit random places in random cities and I love to pop in to well ranked foursquare spots. As I promised in my last New Zealand travel guide, I visited a bunch of lovely coffees and restaurants while in kiwi land and I’m here to tell you about some of my favourites. Let’s go!
AUCKLAND: Remedy Coffee – this place was so good that we actually came back here twice for breakfast. The coffee is beyond perfection and they have plenty of vegetarian/vegan friendly option which is always handy for us!
BLENHEIM: 23 Grove Road Coffee House – this spot was kind of an accident. We stopped at Blenheim which looked like a small off road town, but we ended up having the best brunch ever. They made awesome vegetarian Quishes for us and great coffee with soya milk. I would definitely come back!
QUEENSTOWN: Fergburger – with a score as high as 9 on foursquare we were ready to be sceptical when we decided to visit Fergburger for lunch. All doubts disappeared once we received our orders. We both went for blue cod burgers and shared some fries. No kidding- the burger was the best fish burger I have ever tried and the boy seemed to love it to bits too! We tried several cod burgers later on during our travel, but nothing could compare to this. This gets me hungry even thinking about it!
Queenstown in general was one of the best cities for vegetarian food, we absolutely loved Vudu Cafe & Larder and their veggie burritos. Drinks wise- Mac’s Great White it’s definitely worth mentioning, of course if you’re a fan of wheat beers!
Dunedin: The Perc – we stopped by the Perc while trying to spot some penguins in Dunedin. Not only their staff is amazing, they also have a great selection of freshly made sandwiches, salads and sweets. Gluten free too! You won’t be disappointed.
Invercargill:
Batch Cafe – was one of those completely unexpected spots. We were on our way to Milford Sounds, running very late, but hunger doesn’t wait, does it? So we basically just picked the next slightly bigger city and decided to check foursquare for what’s good out there. That’s how we were lucky to find this amazing coffee shop with great interior, staff and most importantly- food selection!
Mangakino: The Hui Hut – we were originally planning to cook that night, but we arrived at Mangakino pretty late and this was the only place we found opened at the time. The season wasn’t peaking yet, so it’s understandable. We didn’t expect much at first, but we got really pleasantly surprised. The ladies working there were super friendly and the food they made was delicious. Definitely worth visiting when you’re around!
Wanaka: Wana-Takeaway – so New Zealand is famous about their fishermen and boy they’re worth it! Because of this and simply because we love eating junk food from time to time- we knew we had to try Fish & Chips at one point. When we arrived in Wanaka and spotted this tiny take-away spot right at the front of the famous lake- we knew this was just the right place. We got blue cod with some chips and it was amazing. I could do with a portion or two right now!
Christchurch:
alright, it starts to look like we’ve been eating only fast food during our journey, haha. It’s not true tho! We actually cooked a lot and enjoyed plenty of nice meals in restaurants, but once you’re in a hurry- all you can dream about is a good veggie burger you can get right there and right then! When passing by Christchurch we spotted a place called BurgerFuel. We got some veggie burgers and sweet potatoe fries. Oh and it was the first time we ever tried soya milkshakes. What a great place!
Everywhere:
If you don’t enjoy eating out that’s good too. New Zealand has awesome selection of foods in their supermarkets and a lot of tiny farmer’s markets everywhere you go. You can also collect your own seafood! We picked some mussels for dinner one evening, cooked them in butter with some garlic and dill. It turned out to be mouthwatering! Use your imagination, woke up that real foodie in you!
Hope you guys enjoyed this. I hope one day I’ll get back to some of these places or maybe- all of them, if I’m lucky!
Talk to you soon!
