The ponytail is not only one of the most classic hairstyles but also one of the easiest to create. I admit, which I am sure you’ll agree, when I think about this style I relate it back to being at school but this look can be found on runways worldwide. Whether you are going to the shops or heading out to a swanky cocktail bar for the evening, this quick hairstyle can transform your look in seconds.

There are so many different types of ponytail hairstyles to choose from and you don’t have to be a hair guru to master this style. My favourite is a messy ponytail which only takes around 5 minutes.

Tip: I find it works best the day after you have washed your hair so grab that dry shampoo to get that extra volume.

1) First things first you need to create some volume and the best way to do this is to backcomb your hair. Using a comb start to tease the top quarter of your hair at the roots starting at the front of your head and work back. You want to create as much volume as possible so I tend to apply some hairspray before I do this to help secure the back combed hair in place.

2) Continue to section and back comb your hair until your hair is complete. You may want to add some more hairspray to make sure that the volume doesn’t fall flat. Don’t worry if your hair looks wild right now, this is how it is meant to look.

3) Softly comb over the top of your hair to smooth it out. You don’t want to do this too hard as you will brush out all of your hard work.

4) Next you need to bring your hair into a high pony tail, smoothing and evening it out as you bring it up and then secure with hairband.

5) To make it look a bit messier, gently pull your hair out a bit more to add more volume.

6) To finish this look, twist a lock of your hair around the hairband and secure with a bobby pin to create that runway look.

Now you will have a super chic messy up do that all of your friends will be jealous of. Why not team it up with some denim jeans and a simple tee for a casual day look or a little black dress to impress at night?
