This winter I marked 2 years when I started working from home full-time. Of course, back then, I’ve been also attending university and my busy schedule has never caused me to be unproductive. Working from home was 100% joy back then.
Other Freelancer Resources:
It all took another turn recently. Not only I graduated this summer, but the boy also decided to quit his day job and join the world of freelancing. Now don’t get me wrong- it’s fun to be working together and have all this freedom for travelling or having long lunch, but it can also get tough from time to time. Before this, I kind of worked my time around his working hours. We had set dinner time and waking up before 8 am was a must thing to do. So after we got into pernicious habits such as sleeping in or working till late hours- I knew we must come up with some changes in order to keep up with our overall well-being.
Thus, even tho we’re moving into an office next month, I’m still willing to continue following up some daily habits that helped me stay sane all this time. I’ve listed down the top 5 ways on how I kept myself productive and busy while working from home, hope this helps you as well:
I remember myself buying hundreds of notebooks just because they looked cute and then never using them again. Now when I discovered the actual purpose of having a notebook- my productivity increased significantly. Every morning I prepare a list of things I have to do and then mark each of them once they’re completed. Not only it is fun- it also helps me to see my daily progress and keep myself organised. It helped me a lot!

You have to keep yourself active in order to keep your mind clear. Now those people that actually go to work, at least, get to walk/travel to and from their working place. It might not be a lot of movement, but compared to a day-to-day of a regular freelancer- it might seem like a day full of activities. There are days all I do is wake up, make coffee, turn on my computer and work until I go back to bed. At the end of those days, almost everything annoys me. I can’t stress enough how important it is to actually leave your house. Wake up, dress up and go for a walk or run. If the weather conditions are not suitable for spending time outside- do some exercising at home and then treat yourself by going out for a coffee or lunch. You will feel so much better and more productive afterwards, trust me!

The flat we live in at the moment is the first one to have a home office space set up. Before that, I used to work from anywhere I felt like – a kitchen table, living room or even my bed and it never felt ‘right’. A few months ago- the boy set up a desk for me in our bedroom and it’s been so much better since then. Now I have a place to actually ‘go to’ for work. It changes the state of mind from “I’m at home” to “I’m at work”. Also, all of the little things I might need are right there and I don’t have to walk around the flat looking for that notebook or receipt and it saves me a bunch of time!

Start your day early & bright, have a good breakfast, have a workout, start working, have lunch on time, go back to work, have dinner on time, finish working on certain hours, plan something relaxing to do in the evening. Having breaks are important too, make sure not to waste your time tho & get back to work straight away. Make sure to leave yourself plenty of time to relax & leave ‘exploring’ for the weekends. I work almost every day, but what I noticed that I usually add up time dedicated to looking for new ideas into my regular working hours. I believe brainstorming should have separate timeframe & I usually do it in the evenings or weekends. It is fun after all!
