Low cost holidays have never been more accessible with plenty of cheap airfares available for those in the know. I get questioned about my travel expenses all the time and the truth is- if you plan it right, you don’t have to rich to travel to all of those places you dream of. Whether you’re looking for a long haul getaway or short city break, these tips could save you heaps of cash.
Book in advance
This may contradict the many holiday websites offering great last minute offers but generally, booking in advance is the smart choice. Airlines usually open ticket sales for a flight, between 10 and 12 months before the departure date. Seats sold during this period are the cheapest, with the price gradually hiked up as it gets closer to the departure date. Always book over 8 months in advance and you’ll be guaranteed the cheapest price.
Get connected
Don’t want to miss out on the latest travel promotions? Sign up to all the major airlines newsletters and follow them on social media. You’ll be the first to know about seat releases and special offers. Many airlines offer promotions throughout the year with a limited number of seats, sold on a first come, first served basis.
Book at the right time
According to industry insiders, to grab the lowest cost fare for a domestic flight, you’re best booking on a Tuesday at 3pm Eastern Time. Also, try to book your departure for a Wednesday which has been shown to have more seats available than other day of the week. With a reduced demand, the price is often lowered or heavily discounted.
Be flexible
Always be willing to fly when others can’t. It’s this flexibility that could see you book a dream holiday at rock bottom prices. Travelling outside of summer or school holidays is a great way to not only save money but you’ll also avoid the crowds of tourists. When searching for flights, always check a selection of dates as prices can fluctuate from one day to the next. It’s also recommended to depart on the first flight of the morning which is considered the cheapest.
Broaden your search
Bigger airports often sell the cheapest flights whilst others can charge additional fees, increasing the cost of the booking. Be sure to search flights from your home airport as well as those from the nearest largest airport. It may be more cost effective to rent a car and travel the longer distance to a more affordable airport.
Avoid the extras
Extra legroom and priority boarding isn’t a luxury available for those looking to score a deal. Upgrading is a quick way to ramp up the cost of travelling, undoing all of your research and hard work. Don’t be tempted to add on these extras and be sure to travel light to avoid excess luggage fees. At the time of booking, many airlines will offer additional insurance cover and car rental. These are often overpriced, so it’s best to search price comparison websites and book for yourself.
