So I first heard about this technique on Tim Ferris’ youtube video in which he explains how dedicating blocks of time to similar tasks helps to decrease distraction and increase productivity. For Tim, he dedicates each day to particular tasks and even has content creation weeks every quarter. He now even travels in batches instead of taking trips here and there. I absolutely loved the idea of this & decided to give it a go!
In fact, I love batching technique so much, I’m now going through the process where I can actually incorporate this type of work for good. My plan is to do client work on Mondays & Thursdays, focus on the content during Tuesdays and Fridays and leave Wednesdays for marketing and doing more of real-life interactions for my business or new projects.
The past few months have been a bit out of order and I’ve been pretty open with you guys about this. Now the only reason I even have a chance to write this post is the fact I’ve decided to start completing the necessary tasks in blocks. With the new business and renovation on my shoulders, I can honestly say that batching technique actually saved my business and here is why…
How Batching Technique Saved My Business
I simply waste less time. Having a huge project to work on can be distracting. However, I’ve learned by breaking one large task into a bunch of smaller ones and completing them in bulk helps me to stay focused and feel less stressed out. I now try and separate all of my e-mail/content creating and client work in separate batches and try to focus on one particular thing at the time. According to Iiro Jääskeläinen, an associate professor at Aalto University: “It’s easy to fall into the trap of multitasking. In that case, it seems like there is little real progress and this leads to a feeling of inadequacy. Multitasking may also affect one’s ability to concentrate, leading to stress”.
I am the one in control. The great thing about batching is that it allows me to prepare for the upcoming months. Whenever I know that my life is going to get a bit stressful or I have a bunch of new client work flying in- I dedicate a few days to work on my social media content or pre-writing blog posts. This gives me space to focus on the important tasks without simply producing the content just for the sake of it.
I find space to grow. By being a bit more organized, I can now actually set time for learning new things. When I have all my work planned ahead and all my e-mails answered, I can calmy spend a day or two for taking new courses or seeking inspiration elsewhere.
I spend less time working & more time brainstorming. As I’ve previously mentioned, I’ve started a new business last month and this all wouldn’t have been possible without my beloved batching technique. Starting a new thing always requires learning new skills & getting deep into the new topics. Batching simply brings that much-needed control when it comes to managing different projects.
It showed me that “being busy” is bullshit. As Tim Ferris puts it “Being busy is a form of laziness – lazy thinking and indiscriminate action. Being overwhelmed is often as unproductive as doing nothing, and is far more unpleasant. Being selective – doing less – is the path of the productive. Focus on the important few and ignore the rest.”. The thing is, I admire my business to bits & here’s why I’d often excuse myself for being too busy & the fact is- I wasn’t busy at all, I was just really bad at managing my time.
Let me know if you’ve got a chance to try batching a go for yourself! I’d love to know if it worked for you!
