Finding new clients is my number 1 task as a freelance web designer. If you’re hustling like crazy trying to build your online presence, but your business is not profitable, you’re probably not doing it right. The number of followers you get on your social media doesn’t matter if you’re not turning your fans into customers.
I’ve been running a successful blog design business & my blog for three years plus & I manage to bring home a steady paycheck every single month. This doesn’t mean I can now stop looking for clients as they come to me naturally. Of course, it gets easier over time, but I still have to work daily on looking for potential customers.
Here are some ways I follow to find new clients as a freelance web designer:
1. Creating Valuable Content Online
My blog is one of my top traffic sources. By publishing useful tips & giving away free content for bloggers, I attract people that really care about their online presence. My blog readers are more likely to become my customers as I blog mainly about building your blog and business online. If you’re looking to start a blog for yourself, just follow this 5-minute tutorial and get things going!
2. Staying Active on Social Media
I simply can’t trust the company that doesn’t have any social media appearance. Seriously, it’s 2016 after all! I get contacted by my potential clients through my Twitter every single day & keeping these convos public allows me to attract other people that might be interested in hiring me. I also share my best design work on Pinterest, announce my latest business news on Facebook & share my projects on Instagram. If you’re trying to get more clients, putting yourself out there is crucial!
Let me just put this out there. Before you go into the world & start looking for new clients, make sure your own online presence is on point. I actually stumble upon creatives offering blog coaching or branding services and their websites look so outdated & unprofessional. I can’t imagine anyone in their right state of mind hiring these people. I update my shop website every six months or so. It doesn’t mean that I rebrand it completely, but web design trends are changing so quickly that I just have to keep up.
4. Making Buying Options Obvious. Very obvious
Have you ever visited a website with an intention of purchasing a product for yourself or your business & lost all the excitement as you simply weren’t able to find the ‘buy now’ button? I know this might sound like the must think for you as a customer, but I often see so many business owners being afraid to look too sales-y and then making buying process too difficult. I personally use the technique where my customers land on the check-out page in 1-2 clicks, and it works like a charm!
5. Old Fashioned Word of Mouth
The best thing you can do to your business is to get people talking about your services with their friends & colleagues. My previous customers refer me all the time & most of the times people that come to my website through word of the mouth end up purchasing a product on the first visit. I’m also not ashamed to go ahead and ask for feedback. My clients are always willing to give me a shoutout on their social media accounts as I go above & beyond in helping them first.
6. Dedication
If you feel extremely passionate about your business & put all your heart into the products you create, it’s just a matter of time on then your ideal customers will start coming your way. I feel so thrilled anytime someone comes to me and says ‘ I trust you on my blog 100% ‘ and gives me total freedom on using my creativity. It all didn’t come to me in a day & I can’t give you a secret formula as there’s none. Work hard, stick to your guts & be kind, it’s all going to pay off, I promise.
