Over the last three years, my fiance and I have been building a business as a couple. To begin with, let me just tell you that it’s been one helluva road…
Well, what it really means is we spend 24 hours a day in the same place and try not to kill each other.
Joking. It’s not that bad! In fact, we both love it!
Are you and your partner thinking to start a business together? It’s going to be one of the most exciting decisions, but before you dive in, I want to share a few tips with you all that might make your life a bit easier as you go along:
Having Business Meetings Is A Must
Every once in a while we’ll go out to discuss our work on a nice dinner. During it, we’d chat about all the new projects, plans and development we need to do. We also make sure to set our goals for the quarter or a year during these meet ups.
The thing is, as a couple, your business achievements are closely connected to your life achievements as well. Thus, if you’re currently saving up for a nice holiday or an apartment- you both should be on the same page on how much money you need to earn/save in order to make these dreams come true. Be honest with each other and plan ahead.
Perhaps consider setting up a chalkboard in your kitchen and write down all of your goals/deadlines that you set during a meeting to make things a bit easier to manage.
You Have To Know Who Does What
As in any job, setting responsibilities is a great idea. In this case, you can concentrate and improve in separate areas and help your business grow even faster this way. As for us, I am in charge of all things marketing while Tomas takes care of all the technical parts of product development. It proved to work best for us over the years. This way we can really be focussed on our work and bring the best of ourselves in the fields that we are most passionate about.
You Can’t Be Afraid To Be Open With Each Other
Seriously, business is no playground, allow yourself to be bold and open when it comes to talking about your work. Don’t get offended if your partner critiques the way you do things, there’s no time to get personal here. You guys are working towards your dream together and giving some honest feedback to each other constantly can help you get to the next level.
In fact, I think it’s way better to hear the real opinion from your loved one than listen to trolls on the internet. Use this to your advantage!
Have An Online Communication Tool
Not all of the talking can be done in real life and it shouldn’t be. If you have major tasks to discuss and planning to do- rely on tools available online. You can do so over e-mail, but we personally love using Zendesk for managing our client work and creating new projects. I also heard some awesome things about Slack! Find whatever what works for you!
It’s Crucial To Treat Yourselves
It’s important to appreciate each other for working hard and especially when you both work from home- you should make sure to allow yourselves to be spontaneous.
Next time you have a huge project you’re both hustling on, agree to go on a last-minute trip the minute your job is complete. Or simply go to see a movie at the cinema and get all the popcorn you want after an exhausting day.
The sky has no limits here and you guys know what would work best for your needs, just make sure to remember how crucial this is to your relationship.
Yes, You Can Have Awesome Relationship & Run Business Together
I can not understabd why people get so surprised when they find out Tomas & I work together. To some, this seems to be almost impossible. I just don’t get it. I mean, he’s my favourite person in this world, of course, I want to spend all my time with him!
Creating something together, working towards the same goals and having your partner to really understand what you’re going through is so special. Seriously, if you hear any negative comments about going into a business together with your other half- don’t believe them! This can be the most exciting thing ever!
Let me know if you work with your partner or are looking to start a business together. I’d love to connect with you!
