By now, we’re already familiar with those success stories of people making big bucks out of their social media accounts. Being a social media star seems like a great way to make influence online. If you’re a blogger, you might even be thinking about switching to microblogging full-time. I get it, snapping a pretty selfie on Instagram is much quicker than writing a post on your blog. You can land some pretty good deals on there too & your Instagram followers number is probably growing faster than your blog’s monthly pageviews’ count… It all sounds very appealing, huh? But is it really the way to go?
Let me tell you why I believe that your blog has to always stay the most important part of your online marketing:
You’re The One In Control
I don’t want to be a deal breaker, but let me ask you one, very important question. If your online business depends on the platform you have no control on, what would you do if they suddenly decide on closing down? Just as you had no control of for instance Instagram being sold to Facebook, you have no control of the end of any of the major social media platform. Or it’s not really about simply closing down. Algorithms change all the time and it’s just impossible to keep up with every single change. What you really have control of is your own platform. Yes, your blog. Especially, if you’re self-hosted.
You Look Like A Pro
Other social media influencers will understand the power of huge social media following, but when it comes to working with businesses- you will want to keep your presence look as professional as possible. This way, you will be able to offer full analysis on the power of your online influence by offering Google Analytics stats, describe your user engagement and behaviour. Having your own domain name to share is also just way more acknowledged than sending a link to any social media account.
It’s Your Home
You should use your blog as a core of everything you do online. Here, you will always be able to show all of your talents in one place. It’s also a great way to track your story & your business growth. Even if I hid some of my old blog posts, I still have them hosted on my web-host and I’ll always have something to look back to. When it comes to social media- most of the times, all of its content is very temporary.
Big Things Always Have Small Beginnings
Building a successful blog takes time. It really does. You will get exhausted, you will want to quit thousands of times, but if you make through those hard moments, you will look back at all of it with a smile. Think big, do not focus on the trends. Instagram might look like the way to success right now, but in a long run- you should think about building your own empire.
I created my blog way before I built a successful web design business & grew my social media following. It always has been the most important part of my online presence and despite all of the changes happening in the industry- I hope to keep it this way.
Let me know how you feel about this topic! I’d love to hear your opinion!
