Healthy sleep habits can make a huge difference in your quality of life. As a business owner, I had a fair share of sleepless nights and realised how crucial good sleep is for me. Seriously, if I have a terrible night’s sleep, I end up procrastinating during the day and can not properly focus on what’s really important. Good sleep also reflects on your mental & physical health, so if you’ve been dealing with bad sleep lately- we need to sort this out and do it quickly.
Thus, today I decided to share 7 tips that really help me get the best night’s sleep possible.
Open a window, enjoy that fresh gust of the air, this can do its magic. Leave your bedroom window open for at least 15 minutes before going to bed and you’ll notice an improvement in your sleep’s quality on the first night. There are a lot of positive associations between fresh air and relaxation, and when we feel relaxed and comfortable in our environment, we’re more likely to feel sleepy. Even better if you go out for a walk around the neighbourhood before your bedtime, it will help you clear your mind and you’ll feel so more relaxed afterwards.
I noticed this a long time ago- if I go for a run during the day or get any kind of physical activity- I sleep like a baby during the night. Make sure to exercise regularly if you find yourself getting trouble sleeping. As little as 10 minutes of cardio activity such as walking or cycling, can significantly improve the quality of your nighttime sleep, especially when done on a regular basis. So get moving!
You sleep gear is super important as well. If you wake up in the morning with a stiff neck and sore upper back, feeling unrested, there’s a huge chance that your pillow is not helping you get a proper rest. Do your research and invest in a memory foam pillow, not only these react to your body temperature, they also conform to your unique shape. As stated by the Sleep Advisor finding a top rated memory foam pillow for you might lead to a more comfortable and overall better night’s rest. We spend almost one-third of our life sleeping, so getting a proper bedding should be a must.
This is probably one of the top tips I can give you- have a sleeping regime. Keeping a regular sleep schedule—even on weekends—maintains the timing of the body’s internal clock and can help you fall asleep and wake up more easily. Discover your natural body rhythm and try to wake up/go to bed at the same time every day, yes that includes weekends as well!
You should have a proper ritual when it comes to getting ready for bed. Treat yourself well- run a warm bath, find your favourite pyjamas, listen to relaxing music, light a candle- a calm evening routine is important if you want to prepare yourself for the best possible night’s sleep. Find whatever what works for you & leave at least an hour or two prior going to bed for doing something that really helps you loosen up.
You need to separate technology and sleep. It may seem harmless to knock out a few emails before bed or unwind with a favourite TV show, but by keeping your mind engaged, technology can trick your brain into thinking that it needs to stay awake. When we use our devices in bed, we create a wrong association as the bed is a place of study, work or socializing – NOT a place for sleeping. If you have trouble falling asleep at night- stop bringing your devices to bed.
Learning a few meditation exercises can really help you fall asleep faster. I like reflecting on my day and concentrating on my body before I fall asleep. Try looking up some helpful sleep meditation tips to get a better idea of how it can help you sort out your sleeping issues. Meditation also helps you clear your mind and stop worrying about anything you might be growing through. Worry is one of the main reasons that might cause insomnia and meditation can really help you manage that in the first place. Just give it a go! I used to be pretty sceptical about meditation, but after seeing it’s positive impact on me- I can not stop recommending it to everyone!
Stop neglecting the importance of proper sleep and make sure to follow the above tips to get the rest you really deserve. Achieving your goals is so much harder when you constantly feel exhausted.
