Imagine having that total freedom to sleep in every morning instead of spending time in those exhausting traffic jams? Imagine taking vacation whenever you want and having endless opportunities? Working from home does sound like a dream, huh? Too bad the reality is slightly different…
Don’t get me wrong tho. I adore working from home. I’ve tried renting an office and pretending to be one put together human being, but in reality, I feel way more productive at home.
Occasionally, I would head to the local coffee shop to do some work if I feel like I need to change the location to be more productive. However, after six years of working online, I can actually do work in the middle of the craziest party & I won’t struggle to concentrate whatsoever.
Honestly, I don’t think I would change it for anything else, but we all know working from home comes with its ups and downs. Thus for today’s post, I want to share Five Things No-One Tells You About Working From Home…
Let me break this myth once and for all- working from home ain’t that easy. Most of us chose this type of lifestyle because we’re so extremely passionate about what we do that we don’t mind bringing work to our personal space.
Getting away from your clients and to-do lists it’s hard when you don’t have that physical disconnection from your professional life, so most home-based business owners definitely work more than eight hours a day.
Thus, if you want to start a blog or an online business in order to have more time for yourself- I would think again. At least in the first few years, you really need to focus on doing as much as you can in order to get the ball rolling. The good news is- it gets easier afterwards. Every year I work towards optimizing our business as much as possible, so it brings as much profit with fewer hours put in.
Since starting my online career as a blogger & blog designer, I’ve spent way too many days in my pyjamas. As much as it’s comforting, it can also get very depressing.
After discovering Mimi Ikonn on youtube, I got inspired by her thoughts on the importance of proper morning routine. She’s one well put together lady & I really admire her confidence.
Now that doesn’t only contain good breakfast or waking up early, it is also important to actually ‘get ready’ for the day. Putting an outfit together, applying minimal makeup & getting your hair done can instantly get you into that go-getter mood. I didn’t really expect that it can make such a huge difference, but since trying this a few times, I realized how powerful dressing up is. Not only you feel much better about yourself in general, you can also dedicate that extra hour just for yourself every morning.
It is tempting to jump straight on your e-mails first thing in the morning, but it simply isn’t good for your mental state. You need that time to breathe, take things slow and check in with yourself more than you need to answer that urgent e-mail. Trust me, the world won’t collapse if you take a long shower or take time to curl your hair.
We tend to glamourize this freelancing thing way too often. I feel lucky enough to have my fiance Tomas with me at all times, but I can admit that I miss having co-workers!
Sharing those stories after a fun weekend or simply going out for drinks on Thursday and bithching about your boss. It is fun & deep down, you know it too!
When you’re on your own, you might feel a bit lonely sometimes, so if you decide to give this working from home thing a try- make sure you at least have community online or friends that you can share struggles & joys of your work with. We all need that shoulder to cry on when a huge project fails or someone to open a bottle of bubbles with when you hit your monthly target!
Running an online business means that I’m the one in control of my own time. I don’t have an exact schedule of when I need to start/finish my work day, but let me tell you one thing- routine is amazing. Seriously, I have no idea why most people see routine as a negative thing.
The truth is when you have a clear schedule & you manage your time well- routine brings real magic to your life. If you research the way most successful people plan their days out, you would see that all of them actually have a very strict schedule that they tend to stick to no matter what.
Thus, as much as it is nice to know that you have that ability to sleep in on a rainy morning- you will most probably won’t be taking advantage of this very often.
Not only working for yourself allows you to make more money, it also allows you to save some extra cash! I never actually thought about this when I started, but now, I can definitely see the benefits!
You will be able to make your own lunch, buy less clothing, brew coffee at home and don’t even get me started on those commute expenses!
Depending on your business, working from home can be a great way for you to reach that financial freedom you’ve always dreamed of. You see, not only internet gives you an opportunity for increasing your income, but it also gives you ways to reduce your expenses substantially.
