Since getting a new DSLR this summer, blog photography became one of the most crucial parts of my online presence. I still have a long way to go & learn, but I can feel already that I’m now way more comfortable about the visual aspects of my blog than I was ever before. Here are 10 things that helped me improve my blog’s photography + some very snowy shots from our winter fairytale.
Great lighting is the main secret to a great photo. The better it is, the easier it’ll be to achieve that perfect shot. You can also turn your photoshoots into an adventure this way. The boy & I love to go for a ride & look for cool locations around our area. We usually try to do this during the weekends when we have some free time in the afternoon.
2. Shoot On Manual
It might be tempting just to put your camera on auto settings, but you can only strive for the best results if you spend time & learn your settings. Make sure to attempt for the lowest ISO number as well as balance your depth of field & crisp objects. You should also make sure to reach higher shutter speed, so your images don’t turn to be blurry & shaken. I hope to expand a little bit more about the settings in the future, but for now – Google is your best friend.
3. Practice
Just go ahead & take as many pictures as possible! Play around with different settings, learn what works best for you & what doesn’t. You’ll get there. It takes time. I’m still learning!
4. Shoot in RAW
Shooting in raw format makes me feel safe. Even if the images don’t turn the way I want them to, raw images allow me to improve the result without losing too much quality.
5. Sign Up for Adobe Plan
I was beyond excited to learn that Adobe is now offering monthly payment plans for their Photography plan. No longer you have to spend hundreds of dollars to start mastering Photoshop & Lightroom. They also offer 30-day free trial! I personally love using Lightroom for my colour/exposure edits and only turn to Photoshop when I need some major editing done. I do create all of my graphics on Photoshop tho, so it’s definitely worth to have both!
6. Use VSCO
If you want a quick colour edit, I’d suggest investing into VSCO filters for your Lightroom. Every package comes with various pre-packed settings that you can use for your pictures. You can also adjust each of them to make it more personal.
7. Don’t over edit
As much as I love that magical vibes photo editing can bring, I try to keep my photography plain & so should you. Avoid including unnatural shades &overexposee your images. Less is more.
8. Invest
I know, I know, with great settings and lighting you can achieve awesome images even with your phone, BUT. I see a huge difference between my compact camera photography & full-frame DSLR. I chose to go with Canon 6d as it was affordable and yet had all the things I needed at this stage. Definitely consider investing into your camera equipment. After all, Christmas is just around the corner ;)
9. Don’t Force Yourself
If I don’t feel like taking pictures that day, I’d usually re-schedule my week. We all get rainy days, bad hair days, awesome mood days. It’s fine! Just take a few pictures in advance next time.
10. Catch Your True Moments
Take pictures of the things that make you happy. Don’t try to copy your favourite bloggers, just be yourself! I always find photography to be a very personal side of every blog & I love seeing how each of us perceive our days, so be original and invite your readers into your own story. Believe me, behind every great picture, there’s so much true emotion.
Hope you enjoyed this post, folks! Let me know what do you struggle with the most, when it comes to your blog photography?
